Predictive dialing places more calls than there are available agents, predicting how many will be answered by a person, so agents spend less time waiting between calls. The dialer adjusts its pace from live data such as answer rate and call length. Over-dialing produces abandoned calls, which US rules limit.
Predictive dialing is why one outbound agent can handle far more conversations per hour than manual dialing allows, and also why abandon rate is a number every manager has to watch.
How it works on a floor
Say a campaign has 20 fronters ready and only a small share of dials reach a live person. Dialing one number per agent would leave most agents waiting most of the time. A predictive dialer instead calls several numbers per agent and predicts when each agent will be free. When a person answers, the call goes to the next ready agent. Voicemail, busy and no-answer calls are dropped or dispositioned by the system without an agent hearing them.
The dialer keeps recalculating. If answer rates rise or calls get shorter, it slows down. If agents are idle, it speeds up. On ViciDial the mode is set by the dial method, with adaptive options that adjust the dial level while aiming for a target drop percentage.
Predictive, power and preview
Preview dialing shows the agent the lead before the call is placed. Power or progressive dialing places a fixed number of calls per available agent. Predictive dialing varies that number based on prediction. Preview is slow but safe for high-value or sensitive lists. Predictive is fastest, and carries the most abandon risk.
How it shows up in reports
The numbers to watch are agent wait time between calls, the dial level the system is running at, and the drop or abandon rate. US rules generally cap abandoned calls at three percent of live answers per campaign, measured over 30 days. A floor running hot at 4 or 5 percent might look productive this week and be exposed next month.
Common mistakes
Forcing a fixed high ratio to fill a slow shift, and dropping callers who answered.
Mixing very different lists in one campaign, so the dialer's predictions are wrong for both.
Forgetting that abandoned calls still need the required message under US rules. Confirm the details for your campaigns with counsel.
Predictive dialing with voice bots
A voice bot fronting on a predictive campaign changes the math. A human floor's capacity moves as people take breaks, log out or pause. A set number of bots gives fixed capacity, one conversation per bot, for the whole shift. The dialer's prediction has less to guess, which makes it easier to keep both wait time and drop rate in range. The rules on abandoned calls apply the same way.
The other side of the pipeline still matters. If bots qualify callers faster than closers can take them, the bottleneck moves to the closer queue, and the floor should watch hold time before a closer answers.
